Halifax police commission unanimously recommends suspending street checks

Halifax's Board of Police Commissioners voted unanimously on Monday to recommend the immediate suspension of street checks. 

The motion, introduced by councillor Lindell Smith, will look to Halifax Regional Police and RCMP to suspend the practice. It also calls for a formal apology to the African Nova Scotian community. 

In addition, the commission will direct chair Steve Craig to pen a letter to Nova Scotia Justice Minister Mark Furey detailing the board's position. 

Furey was expected to make a decision on the future of street checks in the province on Friday, but said he needed more time to contemplate. 

A report released last month by Dr. Scot Wortley found black people are six times more likely to be stopped by police than white people.
