The author of the report on street checks is currently in town for community meetings, and Dr. Scot Wortley is sharing some of his thoughts on the police response to the report so far.
The report was released almost two months ago, and since then, a moratorium has been placed on the practice in Nova Scotia.
Dr. Wortley tells NEWS 95.7 the police reacion has been 'measured.'
"We have to wait to see what policies, permanent policies eventually emerge, but you know, I've seen responses from police forces in the past that have been far more defensive," says Wortley.
He says that's why he felt it important to include in his report that data collection should be done on both street checks and traffic stops to ensure accountability when it comes to racial discrimination.
He continues, saying previous actions in the province of Ontario provides a blueprint of mistakes Nova Scotia should avoid.
"There are concerns that come from Ontario where I think the practice of street checking has been at times rebranded, and re formulated so that the paper trail on documenting street checks is harder to find," explains Wortley.
Wortley’s third and final community meeting takes place tonight at 6pm at the community YMCA on Gottingen Street.
