Halifax regional council approves first taxi rate increase since 2012

By Mark Hodgins

Amid soaring fuel prices, Halifax regional council has approved the first increase to taxi rates in ten years.

Council approving an average increase of 16.1 per cent. The fare changes will have a greater impact on shorter cab rides, while keeping longer trips competitive.

The new rates take effect immediately. It's the first change to taxi rates since Oct. 2012.

Councillor Waye Mason says it's a challenging time for taxi drivers, now balancing the need to offset higher fuel costs with the reality that higher rates could temporarily drive down business.

Council heard this rate increase moves Halifax taxi rates from slightly below average, to now being slightly above average compared to some other canadian cities.
