Regional council is still working toward creating a report looking at the costs of installing red light cameras in Halifax intersections.

A local transportation expert says they can have a big impact on safety.

Dr. Ahsan Habib says 41 per cent of collisions happen in intersections, and 38 per cent are caused by speeding.

He's the founder of the Dalhousie Transportation Collaboratory, which studies the reasons behind traffic collisions.

Habib hopes red light cameras could help reduce some of these numbers.

"It can be an awareness tool," said Habib. "Whenever you pass an intersection if you don't know whether there's a red light camera, you might be taking caution as well."

Habib says they could also help relieve some of the police resources used for traffic enforcement.
