Many provincial parks open for the season this weekend

With the May long weekend on the horizon, many of Nova Scotia's provincial parks will be officially opening for the season Friday.

Day use parks will lift their gates on Friday, and there will once again be garbage collection and access to washrooms.

Seven camping parks will welcome overnight visitors this Victoria Day long weekend:

  • Blomidon, Canning, Kings County
  • Cape Chignecto, Advocate Harbour, Cumberland County
  • Ellenwood Lake, Deerfield, Yarmouth County
  • Graves Island, East Chester, Lunenburg County
  • Porters Lake, Porters Lake, Halifax Regional Municipality
  • Rissers Beach, Petite Riviere, Lunenburg County
  • Thomas Raddall, Port Joli, Queens County

Mira River opens for camping on May 27, with the rest launching their seasons on June 3.

Alcohol, tobacco and cannabis are not allowed in camping parks until July 2. After that date, those products are only permitted at rented campsites.

“They are not permitted at any time in day-use parks,” Nova Scotia Parks says on its website.

Campers should note check-in time has been pushed back an hour to 2 p.m. and generators can only be used between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

“Campers requiring power for longer than the permitted generator use time will need to book a serviced site,” Nova Scotia Parks states.

Last season more than 91,000 camper nights were booked. If you want a site this year, reservations can be made online or by calling 1-888-544-3434.
