Mooseheads take game one of Hurley Cup with 5-2 win over Cape Breton

By Chris Halef

HALIFAX – The Halifax Mooseheads took the first game of the Hurley Cup with a 5-2 win over the visiting Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on Saturday.

Cape Breton drew first blood, with Brooklyn Kalmikov giving the Screaming Eagles a 1-0 lead at the 19:07 mark of the first period.

That seemed to wake the Mooseheads up in the second period, as Xavier Parent, Otto Somppi and Connor Moynihan rallied off three consecutive goals to give Halifax a 3-1 lead heading into the third.

Cape Breton's Leon Gawanke responded on a power play to make it a one goal game. But it wasn't enough, as a second Parent goal and Benoit Olivier-Groulx's 16th of the season sealed a 5-2 victory for the Herd.

On Sunday, the Mooseheads and the Screaming Eagles will wrap up the Hurley Cup in Sydney.
