The new and improved Highway 102/103 interchange will open on Thanksgiving.

As of sunrise on Monday, Oct. 14, drivers heading east on the 103 or north on the 102 will be using the new ramp and overpass.

Message boards will be along the affected routes to let people know about the change. Traffic control signs, cones and barriers will also be in place.

Construction work began last spring to replace the existing interchange, which was constructed in 1963.

The new structure has been designed to last at least 75 years.

“Opening the new ramp and overpass to motorists is a milestone of this important project,” says Lloyd Hines, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal in a news release. “As our communities grow, we have to ensure the infrastructure in place continues to support safe and efficient travel.”

Work to demolish the existing 103 overpass will start in late November, and will require a 48-hour continuous weekend closure of Highway 102 with detours.

The province says around 30,000 vehicles a day travel through the interchange on Highway 103, and 55,000 vehicles a day go through it on Highway 102.
