New study looking into how often people dream about sex

By Meghan Groff

A researcher at St. Francis Xavier University wants to know about your dreams and your sex life.

The study, Sexuality and Dreaming, is part of Amira Hmidan's honours thesis, who says there's not a lot of research in this area.

“I'm just interested in seeing whether there's a relationship between one's waking life traits — such as sexuality, personality and gender — and then I want to see if these traits relate to the content and frequency of one's dreams,” she told NEWS 95.7's The Rick Howe Show.

Originally the study was only open to fellow students at StFX, but since she's invited the public to fill out the online form, the responses have been rolling in.

The survey is anonymous and confidential, but participants will need to provide basic demographic information like age, gender and relationship status.

Hmidan said after the basics, the questions get more personal.

“How often they have sex, how often the masturbate, how often they consume pornography,” she explained. “Later on in the survey we ask if people have sexual dreams, and towards the end we have a question that asks people to describe their most sexual dream.”

Those who feel uncomfortable with the questions can stop doing the survey at any time by closing their internet browser. They can also leave questions blank.

Hmidan said, so far, around 60 per cent of respondents have been female. She said that may be because previous research has shown women recall dreams more frequently than men.

According to those who have already filled out the survey, most respondents say they have at least one sexual dream a month.

Participants need to be at least 18 and the questionnaire takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour to complete.
