NHL draft Friday could be historic night for Halifax Mooseheads

HALIFAX – It could be a historic night for the Halifax Mooseheads with the possibility of three players being taken in the first round of the National Hockey League draft.

In what could be a first for the franchise in its 24-year history, Filip Zadina, Benoit Olivier-Groulx and Jared McIsaac could all be drafted in the first round when the first round is held Friday night in Dallas.

Many experts predict Zadina will get the call early, including Mooseheads play-by-play man Garreth Macdonald, who thinks there's a chance he ends up with a Canadian team.

“There's talk that the Habs could be looking to draft a centre iceman but certainly he would be worthy of that third overall selection,” he said.

McIsaac, meantime, will “likely” end up being drafted sometime late in the first round, Macdonald said, with his chances higher than that of Groulx, who may end being called in the second round Saturday.

Macdonald adds the available talent is a testament to the Mooseheads' ability to help breed future NHL'ers, adding Raphael Lavoie will likely go in the first round of next year's draft as well.

Draft coverage begins Friday at 7 p.m. on Sportsnet with the first round scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
