Nova Scotia-born director up for best video at Grammys

A film director originally from Nova Scotia is up for a Grammy this year.

Avondale native Andy Hines says he's still in shock after learning he has been nominated in the best video category.

“I was speechless,” said Hines. “I still am.”

Hines now lives in California pursuing a career in making films.

He woke up to a number of texts from friends on the east coast, telling him he was nominated for a Grammy for 1-800-273-8255 by Logic, which features Khalid and Canadian singer Alessia Cara.

Hines says he's honoured to be nominated, considering the video's serious subject matter.

“For me it's really special to see this video that's making a difference in young people's lives and being seen,” Hines told HalifaxToday.”For me it makes a difference because it gets a bigger audience, more people will get to see it and hopefully we can change people's lives.”

The video explores the subject matter of being a black teenager, sexuality and suicide.

Although he acknowledges that he is just scratching the surface, Hines says he hopes that his nomination can inspire others from the province to take a chance and pursue their dreams.
