Nurses’ union president urges Nova Scotians to get flu shots

By Chris Halef

The president of the Nova Scotia Nurses Union is it's more important than ever that residents go out and get their flu shots

Janet Hazelton says that message especially holds true for health care workers, adding the flu along with a potential spike in COVID-19 cases could add pressure to the already strained health care system.

She told NEWS 95.7's The Sheldon MacLeod Show this is another layer of protection for people.

“Now that people are social distancing and wearing masks and they're washing their hands, now they can add another layer of protection for themselves and for others by getting the flu shot,” said Hazelton. “You can make an appointment with your primary health care person, or you can attend one of these drive-by clinics or pharmacies. There's lots of opportunities for people.”

Hazelton says it's a mistake for residents to let their guard down. She adds the flu shot is free, painless and available everywhere.

Nova Scotia has brought in roughly 500,000 doses of the flu vaccine this year.
