Online fundraiser started for woman recovering from flesh-eating disease

An East Dover woman has started a GoFundMe campaign to help her mother recover from flesh-eating disease.

According to the post, Colleen Hilton was admitted to the emergency room on Feb. 2 with what she thought was a bad flu.

After several tests, she was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis, also known as flesh-eating disease.

“Her body was in septic shock and she was now in for the fight of her life,” said the post by Hilton's daughter Victoria Patey. “She was put into an induced coma and immediately underwent surgery to remove the infection.”

After multiple surgeries, three hospitals and five different units, the infection is under control and Hilton is conscious and healing, however she's now facing “multiple amputations/ partial amputations of her hands and feet due to extensive blood clotting.”

The campaign aims to raise $10,000 for her rehab and recovery.

Her family hopes therapy and the use of prosthetics will help Hilton retain her independence.
