Premier McNeil talks about reducing red tape and taxes this small business week

By Katie Hartai

Premier Stephen McNeil spoke Tuesday morning behind the counter at Tart & Soul Cafe about how the government is helping small businesses in the province.

This comes during Small Business Week which is currently being marked across the country.

The premier said the government is cutting red tape and taxes – which he says are the two top priorities of small businesses.

The McNeil' government's latest budget would increase the small business tax threshold which will lower taxes for more than 1,800 small businesses.

“Increasing the small business tax threshold from $350,000 to $500,000 leaves about $14-million in the hands of small business owners across the province,” said McNeil. “That is an important piece of infrastructure and investment to grow good jobs and good opportunities.”

He added less red tape and lower taxes means fewer unnecessary costs for business owners and more money to be reinvested into the province.

McNeil said the government is also making existing rules easier to understand and navigate through a new Business Navigator Service, which nearly 800 small business owners have used since it launched in February.

As a former small business owner, McNeil said he knows how far every dollar gets stretched.
