A mjaor upgrade is coming to a Saint Mary’s University building.

The 22-storey Loyola Residence is getting a solar retrofit.

Astrophysics professor Rob Thacker tells CityNews Halifax the older building has been well constructed but the concrete cladding needs to be replaced.

"So they decided on the south-facing side of the building, we could actually put a whole bunch of solar cells on that and get a lot of electrical power from that," he says.

Work has just begun, and when it's finished it should be able to produce about half of the electrical power needed for the high rise home to over 430 students.

"I think it's a great example of thinking creatively about sustainable solutions," Thacker added.
