Storm closures and cancellations: Friday, March 19, 2021

A blast of winter weather on the last full day of winter is forcing delays and cancellations in the Halifax area on Friday.

SCHOOLS: 

Saint Mary's University campus will reopen at 3 p.m., however the library will remain closed. Virtual classes will continue as scheduled unless students are informed otherwise by individual professors.

NSCC Metro campuses are closed today.

Public school students are on March Break.

TRANSPORTATION:

The winter parking ban will be enforced overnight into Saturday.

Some Halifax Transit routes are on snow plan. Expect delays if you're taking the bus today.

Streets, sidewalks and bike lanes are snow covered, and Haligonians are reminded to use caution while travelling.

SERVICES:

The collection services of garbage, organics, and recyclables scheduled today has been postponed until tomorrow, Saturday, March 20 in the following areas:

  • Halifax (Armdale, Spryfield, Purcells Cove)
  • Central Dartmouth
  • Bedford
  • Herring Cove, Sambro, Harrietsfield area
  • Fall River, Fletchers Lake
  • Cole Harbour, Westphal, Cherry Brook area

The Household Special Waste Depot will be cancelled for tomorrow, Saturday, March 20.

WCB Nova Scotia Halifax offices will be closed Mar 19th due to the weather conditions.

Veith House is closed today due to the weather. Staff are contactable via email.

Feed Nova Scotia's office will remain closed for the day and their trucks will not be making deliveries.

RECREATION:

Municipal recreation centres will delay opening until at least 4 p.m. 

March Break Day Camps at most municipal facilities will be cancelled for the day.

The Halifax Public Gardens is closed today.

The Captain William Spry Public Library will delay opening until 2 p.m. Musquodoboit Harbour Public Library and Sheet Harbour Public Library will remain closed.

HEALTH CARE:

The pop-up rapid COVID-19 testing site at Dalhousie University's Goldberg Building will now open at 2:30 p.m.

The COVID-19 testing centre at St. Mary's University will remain OPEN despite the fact that in-person university activities are cancelled due to expected weather conditions.

The Public Health Mobile Unit community-based COVID-19 testing in Mount Uniacke is cancelled today. Testing will go ahead on Saturday and Sunday at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 165 Saturday, March 20 and Sunday, March 21 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

BUSINESSES:

All East Coast Credit Union branches will be closed for the day.

Some businesses may be closed or have a delayed opening. It might be a good idea to call ahead.

GOVERNMENT:

Department of Fisheries and Oceans offices will be closed in HRM today.
