Uber officially launches in Halifax Thursday afternoon

It's an announcement long awaited by some, Uber will be launching in Halifax Regional Municipality Thursday afternoon.

In a news release, the company says the ridesharing service will be available as of 1 p.m for essential travel.

“Where there is an essential need – like travel for frontline workers or the need to pick up a prescription – Haligonians will be able to request a safe, affordable ride through the Uber app,” the statement said.

Uber is asking all non-essential travellers to stay home at this time.

“Once restrictions ease, we look forward to supporting Halifax’s recovery and growth,” said Matthew Price, Uber Canada's general manager.

All riders will need to adhere to public health measures, and masks are required for both drivers and passengers.

Any app users who have been flagged for not wearing a mask will be required to prove they have a face covering on future trips by taking a selfie.
