What’s open and what’s closed on Heritage Day

As Nova Scotia honours Mona Parsons on Heritage Day Monday, you can expect malls, grocery stores, NSLCs and banks to all be closed.

Some pharmacies will be open, but may have reduced operating hours.

All branches and departments of Halifax Public Libraries will be closed on Monday.

Halifax Transit buses and ferries will be operating on holiday service.

On-street parking meter spaces in Halifax Regional Municipality are free on Heritage Day, but motorists will still need to obey other posted signage.

Many recreation facilities will be closed, HRM says to call ahead for operating hours and program information. 

The Emera Oval will be open with free public skates held throughout the day.

There will be no municipal solid waste collection on Monday; instead collection of garbage, organics and recyclables will take place on Saturday, February 17.

The Household Special Waste Depot in Bayers Lake will be closed on Saturday, Feb. 17, and will re-open for regular operating hours on Saturday, Feb. 24.

The 311 Contact Centre will be operating on regular hours, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., on Heritage Day. HRM's five Customer Service Centres will be closed.

The following events will be held to commemorate Mona Parsons:

  • Saturday, Feb. 17: Mona Parsons Birthday Celebration in Wolfville, with the Women of Wolfville and the Wolfville Historical Society. The event starts at 8:30 a.m. at the Wolfville Farmers' Market, 24 Elm Ave.
  • Sunday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m.: Reading at the Halifax Central Library, 5440 Spring Garden Rd., “The Bitterest Time: The War Story of Mona Parsons” a play by Andria Hill-Lehr and Sarah Jane Blenkhorn
  • Monday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m.: A celebration of Mona's life at the MacDonald Museum, 21 School St., Middleton
  • Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m.: Author reading by Andria Hill-Lehr, from her book, From Privilege to Prison, from Nova Scotia to Nazi Europe, at the Keshen Goodman Public Library, 330 Lacewood Ave., Halifax
