What’s open and what’s closed on Remembrance Day

By CityNews Halifax Staff

Nova Scotians will pause at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month to pay tribute to our veterans.

Here's a look at what will be open and closed for Remembrance Day:

BUSINESSES

Many businesses are prohibited from opening in Nova Scotia on Nov. 11 under the province's Remembrance Day Act.

This means you can expect most stores and businesses to be shut down Friday. This includes grocery stores, NSLCs and malls.

You'll be able to find open pharmacies, however some may have reduced hours of operation.

Expect banks to be closed.

Several other businesses may be closed or have reduced operating hours, so it's best to call ahead or check social media and/or websites for more information.

TRANSPORTATION

Halifax Transit will be running on a holiday schedule, and buses, ferries and Access-A-Bus will be free for all veterans and military personnel, along with their accompanying family members, as long as they are in uniform or display their military identification upon boarding.

If you happen to be on a transit bus at 11 a.m., expect it to pull over at that time for three minutes of silence.

Halifax Regional Municipality says there will be a number of rolling street closures and traffic delays as Remembrance Day processions make their way to local ceremonies.

On-street parking will be free.  Motorists are reminded to abide by other posted signage, including no stopping, accessible parking spaces and no parking zones.

RECREATION

All Halifax Public Libraries branches will be closed.

Most municipally-operated recreation facilities will be closed on Friday. People are urged to call their facility for specific information.

SERVICES

Canada Post will not be collecting or delivering mail on Friday.

There will be no municipal solid waste collection services on Remembrance Day. If that's your day, put out your garbage, organics and recycling on Saturday, Nov. 12.

The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility, the Halifax recycling facility and municipal composting facilities will be closed on Friday, but will be open for regular hours on Saturday.

The Household Special Waste (HSW) Depot in Bayers Lake will be closed on Saturday, Nov. 12.

The 311 Contact Centre will be operating on regular hours, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Remembrance Day, however the three Customer Service Centres that provide in-person access to municipal services and payments will be closed.
