What’s open and what’s closed over the Easter long weekend

By Meghan Groff

There will be several closures over the long weekend on both Good Friday and Easter Sunday, and some of those closures extend into Monday.

Here's a look at what you can expect on the Easter long weekend:

BUSINESSES

Both Good Friday and Easter Sunday are designated retail closing days in Nova Scotia, which means you can expect most stores and businesses to be shut down those two days.

This includes grocery stores, NSLCs and malls.

Many pharmacies will be open, however some may have reduced hours of operation on Friday and/or Sunday.

Expect banks to be closed both Friday and Sunday. Some may also be closed Saturday.

Several other businesses may be closed or have reduced operating hours, and that may extend into Monday, so it's best to call ahead or check social media and/or websites for more information.

TRANSPORTATION

Halifax Transit buses will be operating on holiday service Good Friday and there will be no ferry service that day. The Alderney ferry will run on Saturday, then operate on holiday service Sunday. Buses and ferries will operate on regular schedules on Monday.

On-street parking will be free on Good Friday and Easter Monday.

RECREATION

All branches and departments of Halifax Public Libraries will be closed Friday, Sunday and Monday.

Many municipally-operated recreation facilities will be closed on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. HRM recommends calling ahead for operating hours and program information.

SERVICES

Canada Post will not be collecting or delivering mail on Good Friday or Easter Monday.

There will be no municipal solid waste collection on Good Friday. If that's your day, take your garbage, organics and recyclables to the curb on Saturday, April 16.

There will be regular curbside collection on Easter Monday.

The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility, the municipal recycling plant and municipal composting facilities will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, but will be open for regular operating hours on Saturday and Monday.

The Household Special Waste Depot in Bayers Lake will be closed this Saturday.

The 311 Contact Centre will be operating on regular hours on Friday and Monday (from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) and Saturday and Sunday (from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.)

The three Customer Service Centres that provide in-person access to municipal services and payments will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday.
