‘Who is your real-life superhero,’ asks Halifax advocate ahead of Black Panther screening

By Meghan Groff

Quentrel Provo is asking black youth in the Halifax area to tell him about their real-life superheroes.

The founder of Stop the Violence has raised enough donations through crowdfunding to take 400 kids to see the action flick Black Panther.

The movie is Marvel's first superhero film to feature a predominantly black cast.

“It's a really big thing to for the kids to see themselves reflected on the big screen … just to empower them and inspire them in whatever they do,” Provo told NEWS 95.7's The Sheldon MacLeod Show.

His original fundraising aim was $3,500, which would have covered the cost to rent the theatre, and buy a ticket, popcorn and pop for 200 children. When he raised that within about 24 hours, he doubled his goal.

He's asking black youth to tell him who their real life superhero is and why, and he said the responses have been heartwarming.

“The answers have been so amazing, from their mothers, to their uncles, to Martin Luther King,” said Provo.

The movie screening takes place Thursday, February 22 at Dartmouth Crossing Cineplex Cinemas.
