Woman dies of injuries 41 years after being shot, death ruled homicide

By Meghan Groff

Halifax District RCMP say a 77-year-old woman died in February 2017 as a result of being shot 41 years ago.

“The woman was the victim of a shooting in Upper Lawrencetown on June 23, 1976,” explained Cpl. Dal Hutchinson.

At that time, the suspect, a 34-year-old man, was found deceased at a business in Upper Lawrencetown. Police have now ruled it to be a homicide-suicide.

The woman survived her injuries at the time, but died on February 16, 2017 as a result of “injury complications” from the shooting.

“It's very unique and very rare that something like this is reported, where you have an incident 41 years ago, and as a result of the injuries sustained at that time, someone later passes away,” said Hutcinson. “It just shows the ability of investigations to continue.”

Police say both individuals were known to each other.
