Nova Scotia closing two Cape Breton hospitals, expanding two others

By Canadian Press

SYDNEY, N.S. – Nova Scotia has announced major changes to health care delivery in Cape Breton, including the closing of two hospitals and the expansion of two others.

The province says Northside General Hospital in North Sydney, N.S., and New Waterford Consolidated Hospital will be closing, and two new community health centres and long-term care facilities will be built in their place.

Politicians were booed at a news conference announcing the changes Monday.

The province says emergency departments at Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney, N.S., and the Glace Bay Hospital will be expanded.

The government says surgeries and emergency services will gradually move from New Waterford Consolidated and Northside General to Glace Bay and the Cape Breton Regional hospitals.

It says New Waterford Consolidated and Northside General have exceeded their lifespan and cannot be renovated.
