Nova Scotia teacher charged for assault after pushing a child in the classroom

By Canadian Press

HALIFAX — A Nova Scotia teacher has been charged with assault for allegedly pushing a child to the floor in a classroom at an elementary school.

The West Hants District RCMP said in a news release Wednesday that a teacher was seen pushing a student in the classroom on April 7, causing the child’s head to strike the floor.

A 27-year-old woman from Falmouth, N.S., was arrested Tuesday and is scheduled to appear on a charge of assault in Windsor provincial court in June.

The Three Mile Plains District School teacher who was charged has been on leave since the incident was reported to the school in early April, said Kristen Loyst, a spokesperson for the Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education. She declined to say if the teacher’s leave was paid or unpaid.

RCMP spokesperson Const. Guillaume Tremblay would not give the child’s age or say if any injuries resulted, out of “consideration for the child and their family.” Three Mile Plains District School has students from pre-kindergarten to Grade 5.

Loyst said staff at the school are focused on the well-being of students and that a school counsellor is available for students needing additional support.

“Staff of the school are going to be mindful of supporting kids, just as they would on any other day, but they’ll be particularly watchful to see if any kids have concerns,” Loyst said in an interview Wednesday.
