Suspect charged after allegedly threatening to stab men who broke up fight (update)

A 61-year-old Dartmouth man has appeared in court on several charges after an incident in the downtown core Monday night.

Halifax Regional Police were called to Lower Water Street near Salter just after 7 p.m. 

Investigators believe a man had been in a fight with another man along the Halifax Waterfront, and then when a group of people tried to break it up, they say the suspect threatened to stab them with a knife.

No knife was seen or found at the scene.

Wayne Derrick Bassett has been charged with four counts of uttering threats, four counts of assault and one count of assaulting a police officer.

Police are looking for witnesses and video from the area at the time of the incident.
