Members of 2003 world junior hockey team accused of group sexual assault in Halifax

Members of the 2003 men's world junior hockey championship team are being investigated for a historic sexual assault in Halifax.

Hockey Canada said it learned of the alleged incident on Thursday evening after being contacted by a TSN reporter seeking comment.

The organization said it immediately contacted Halifax Regional Police as Halifax was the co-host of the 2003 world juniors.

In an emailed statement to CityNews Halifax, Halifax Regional police confirmed they received a report late Thursday night.

“We received a report related to a historical sexual assault that is alleged to have occurred in Halifax in 2003,” the statement said. “We take all matters of this nature very seriously and will be conducting a thorough investigation.”

This comes after Hockey Canada lost government funding and corporate sponsorship for its handling of an alleged sexual assault involving several members of the 2018 men's junior team.
