A security guard at Halifax Shopping Centre was hurt during an attempted robbery on Monday evening, according to Halifax Regional Police.

HRP said officers were called to the mall after a suspect smashed out jewellery cabinets at the Charm Diamond Centre store, wielding a hammer.

The man allegedly threatened an employee before hitting a security guard. The injuries were not life-threatening, police said.

Bystanders helped out, rushing in to hold the suspect down until more security showed up.

Police say 37-year-old Jonathan Hill is being held for court and is charged with robbery and assault with a weapon.
