Loving your home in 2020

By Janet Kelly

February is a great time of year to ask the question… do you love your home?

If you don’t, it’s okay.

Whether it means completing a renovation project, updating decor, or getting your hands (and clothes) dirty with a fresh coat of paint sometimes there’s no fixing your relationship with your home.

But here’s how you can try.

Is it time to do inventory?

Deciding on the right path to falling back in love with your home starts with taking an inventory of your likes and dislikes. What rooms are you in the most? Which rooms give you the most grief? Making a list is a good place to start to find solutions and bring you closer to loving your home.

Once you identify the problems you can start to think about addressing them.

If a room is feeling a bit dated, it might be a good time for a coat of paint. Maybe updating the light bulbs and adding some new accent pillows will fix your room woes. It’s a good idea to start with cost-effective upgrades before taking on additional projects.

Can you fix your problems away?

If moving your furniture around and adding a few throw pillows doesn’t help, it might be time for some more thorough changes.

With Spring around the corner, now is a great time to think about improving your home. With the rising home prices in Halifax, renovations can help to increase the value of your home further and make it more competitive when it’s time to sell.

Need help with renovation costs? Consider refinancing to help fund your upgrades. If you’ve built up some equity in your home, refinancing to fund improvements can actually increase the value of your home and outweigh the investment to renovate.

Maybe it’s time to start fresh…

If you’ve taken an inventory and it feels like you’ll never be happy with your home, selling your home and finding something new could be the only solution. And with the busy market in Halifax, selling might mean gaining a nice return on your investment. However, be warned. Shopping for real estate in a seller’s market might make the process of finding something suitable and in-budget a bit more challenging.

Whether you’re looking to renovate or searching the market for a home that better meets your needs, finding the smartest ways to refinance your property or access the best mortgage rates are important steps in being content with your home.
