Soon winter will turn to spring on the tread of a bicycle

By Danae Ingram

Hopping on a bike, a scooter or skates is a childhood rite of passage. It offers a child that heady, first taste of freedom and autonomy while their parent must keep anxiety in check. With that said, few items offer parents more peace of mind, than a life-saving bicycle helmet. However, far too often economics may prevent a young person from having access to such essential brain-saving protection.

Lids4kids.ca is a non-profit organization created by Valent Law with the expressed goal to ensure all Children in Atlantic Canada are protected by a helmet. To date over 10,000 children have received helmets from Lids4Kids.ca through donations and fundraising events.

“Finances shouldn’t be an obstacle to safety”

No one appreciates helmet safety more than Valent Law’s Mike Dull, “I’ve seen first-hand the value that quality bike helmets offer in terms of preventing serious injuries to cyclists. And, unfortunately, the opposite as well. I have helped one young woman who suffered a life-altering brain injury when she was hit by a car on a bike when not wearing a bike helmet. When she told me that she couldn’t afford one, it dawned on me that she’s likely not the only person with that struggle. Finances shouldn’t be an obstacle to safety. This was the genesis of the initiative; to help put a helmet on the head of every Nova Scotian child who needs one. We hope that this makes a difference in at least one child’s life.”

Lids4kids.ca is one of many local community programs which Valent Law supports. “I’ve been extremely blessed to have found work that I’m passionate about and which can make a meaningful difference in the lives of Nova Scotian families.” Mike Dull expands, “By successfully serving our clients, we are fortunate to be financially able to give back in a way that makes a difference in our wider community. It’s a calling that each person in my firm is committed to.”

“Our work can change people’s lives for the better”

For many of Valent Law’s community projects, the support goes beyond a financial contribution to involve the firm’s resources and people. Mike Dull explains, “Our firm prides itself on being a human-centred law firm. We never want to lose sight of the fact that our work can change people’s lives for the better. Every single person at the firm is intimately involved in our community initiatives. It makes our work meaningful in a way that a simply writing a corporate cheque could never do.”
