Mooseheads’ Justin Barron named to Team Canada World Junior roster

Haligonians will get to cheer on one of our own as Team Canada defends gold at the World Junior Hockey Championships.

Hockey Canada has released its 25-man roster for the tournament and the captain of the Halifax Mooseheads is on it.

Justin Barron survived the final round of cuts made by head coach Andre Tourigny and his staff Friday.

The camp was interrupted for two weeks by a quarantine after two players tested positive for COVID-19. It resumed earlier this week with two final intrasquad games that helped determine the final cuts.

Overall, the roster features 14 forwards, eight defencemen and three goalies, with six players returning from last year's gold-medal winning team. All 14 forwards and six of the eight defencemen were first-round picks in the NHL.

That includes Barron, who was selected 25th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in October's NHL Entry Draft.

The 19-year-old Halifax native won't be the only member of the Herd to play in the World Juniors.

Forward Senna Peeters will hit the ice for Austria and Attilio Biasca is still hoping to earn a spot on Switzerland's roster.
