Mooseheads’ winning streak ends with 5-2 loss to Val d’Or

By CityNews Halifax Staff

It wasn't meant to be for the Halifax Mooseheads in a Saturday night meeting with the Val d'Or Foreurs.

Mathieu Catafort opened the scoring with a first period powerplay marker. Senna Peeters and Robert Orr picked up assists on Catafort's third goal of the season.

The Mooseheads came out strong to start the second period but it was Val d'Or striking first in the middle frame. An unassisted goal from Mathis Demers tied the game at 1-1.

The Foreurs took the lead late in the second period on shot from Alexander Mirzabalaev to make it 2-1 Val d'Dor, and added a quick powerplay goal to start the third period to make it 3-1.

Halifax put the pressure on eventually earning a powerplay of its own, but it was Val d'Or capitalizing with Jason Desruisseaux finishing off a shorthanded chance.

The Foreurs weren't done, adding another goal just minutes later for a 5-1 lead.

After a minutes-long delay to sort out a slew of penalties, it was the Mooseheads picking up a shorthanded marker as Elliot Desnoyers finished off a pass from Orr to bring the game back within three.

The final score was 5-2 as Val d'Or snapped Halifax's three game winning streak.

The Mooseheads are back in action Sunday for another edition of the battle of Nova Scotia as Cape Breton visits Halifax for an afternoon matchup.
