Overnight house fire outside of Halifax claims life

By Mark Hodgins

An overnight fire in the Williamswood area has claimed a life.

Halifax Fire responded to Moody Park Dr. just before 1:30 a.m. Friday to reports of a two-storey home on fire.

“When the crews arrived on scene the fire had breached the roof,” explained district chief Brad Connors. “The house was not quite fully involved, but pretty close.”

Connors said a person who had managed to escape the home told firefighters there was someone still inside.

“Crews made several attempts to get into the second floor where they had reports the individual was,” Connors said. “They were able to eventually get into the room and locate one occupant who is deceased.”

There were no details immediately available about the person who died in the fire.

The district chief said as of 5 a.m. crews were still on the scene working to fully extinguish the fire.

Connors expected firefighters would be at the house through the morning. Investigators had been called in to figure out what started the fire.

Moody Park Drive was closed to traffic for most of the day but has since reopened.
