Christmas tree growers in Nova Scotia don’t think an idea that’s catching on out west will work here.
A company in British Columbia offers rented trees in a pot that are replanted after use.
The cost to be green, $100.
However Mathew Wright with the Nova Scotia Christmas Tree Council doesn’t think it could work here in this province.
“Not as easily because of the differences in our climate. The problem here is you move those trees inside into a warm climate in the house, and you’re going to have to take them out into rather freezing conditions by the end of Christmas when you’re in January,” says Wright.
“The roots aren’t acclimatized and you’re going to have a significant amount of freeze damage.”
Meanwhile, the B.C. company admits its rented trees are mangy, not like the pruned ones here. However mangy or not 200 people have paid the $100 rental
fee.
