Another economic blow to southwest Nova Scotia today as the Cat ferry is ending its service in the Spring.
The decision to shut down the ferry from Yarmouth to Portland and Bar Harbor, Maine leaves 120 people without a job.
Area MLA Chris D’Entrement says it’s tough news to take.
“Well it’s almost heart stoppage moment, yarmouth county, southwest nova scotia has depended so much on the ferry to Maine.”
Yarmouth mayor Phil Mooney calls it a major loss and they will fight the decision.
“We have to fight this, we have to fight this for the good of western Nova Scotia,” says Mooney.
“Not only does is affect Yarmouth, it affects Argyle, Shelburne counties, Queens county.”
And this follows the recent news of a startup airline service from Yarmouth to Halifax and Portland, Maine being cut to the area.
Bay Ferries president Mark MacDonald says it was a difficult decision to make. But he says fewer and fewer people are using the Cat. He says with new US passport rules, a strong loonie and a weak American economy, the decision had to be made.
