Increased use doesn’t mean more help for Halifax food banks

While a Halifax food bank is reporting an increase in need during the Christmas season, the province’s Minister of Community Services says the services are no more adequate not than when the Tories were in power.

Denise Peterson-Rafuse says her department is reviewing income assistance to see where improvements can be made, but that any changes will hinge on the budget.

“We know there’s a need. So we’re looking at, as part of our strategy, a review of income assistance and what it’s about. Now it’s seen as a last resort and we need to take a different direction in looking at that,” said Peterson-Rafuse following the minister monthly cabinet meeting, adding there is no time line for improvements.

Feed Nova Scotia says the need for services has increased 11 per cent.
