Premier changes his mind on barrister society fees

Premier Darrell Dexter now says he will pay his own his own annual fees to the Nova Scotia Barrister’s Society.
The Liberals have been urging the premier to reimburse taxpayers for the bar society fees, about $3500 annually for practicing lawyers.
Dexter isn’t going to repay that money, but he says he’s changing his status to that of a non-practicing lawyer, which means a lower annual fee.
“It will go down to $250 or something of that nature and I’ll just cover it myself,” says Premier Darrell Dexter.
Dexter continues to insist he’s been following proper guidelines by having taxpayer cover the fees. However, Liberal leader Stephen McNeil begs to differ. He says the premier’s decision today still falls short.
“How long have taxpayers been paying for his bar society fees,” asks McNeil. “And how much have they been paying over the years to keep Darrell Dexter as a member of good standing in the bar society?”
He wants the premier to reimburse taxpayers for all the fees paid, which he figures is more than $10,000.
