N.S. breeders say crop ban ‘hypocritical’

Some Nova Scotia dog breeders aren’t happy about a new ban on tail and ear docking.

The Nova Scotia Veterinary Medical Association is banning members from performing surgeries that alter a dog’s appearance strictly for cosmetic purposes.

Halifax vet Dr. Frank Woodbury tells the CBC there’s no need to “mutilate” dogs to conform to a certain look.

But Mary Spinelli, a Dartmouth-based Doberman Pinscher breeder says the procedures aren’t cruel if done properly.

She says the ban is hypocritical when vets will still declaw cats.

Another Doberman owner worries about what dog owners will do if they can’t get a qualified vet to perform the procedure.
