Protesters and police ready for G8 meeting

Development ministers from the G8 countries will be gathering in Halifax Monday.

A number of groups will be on hand to greet the ministers, with protests beginning on Sunday

The ministers from the G8 countries are meeting here to lay the groundwork for a leaders summit in June in Ontario.

A rally and march in protest is planned for Sunday afternoon starting at Victoria Park.

Kyle Buott of the Halifax-Dartmouth and District Labour Council says they’re protesting the economic policies of the G8 countries.

“The G8 is responsible for the economic crisis,” he said. “Free trade and market deregulation have led to this economic crisis that is wrecking the lives of millions of workers across the world. This is something we need to oppose while they’re here in Halifax.”

He’s promising a peaceful protest. Halifax police constable Brian Palmeter says   police will be keeping an eye on things.

“We typically don’t discuss our deployment specifically,” he said. “But what I will say is we will have resources in place and prepared should we be required to intervene in any way.”

Protesters also plan to demonstrate Monday outside the site of the ministers meeting.
