Former Nova Scotian gets life sentence for brutal slaying

A former Dartmouth man and junior hockey star has been sentenced to life without parole for 16 years for killing a 23-year-old single mother in her Red Deer, Alberta home.
Brett Jones then assaulted Teagan Klein’s three-year-old son before locking him in the home’s basement and fleeing the scene.
It goes back to the night of February 4, 2009.
The Calgary Herald reports Jones and Klein got into a heated argument. Jones then went to the garage for a cigarette and came back with the garden edger he used to beat Klein to death with.
Klein suffered deep cuts, several broken bones, and a severe head injury.
The victim’s uncle, Darren McArthur, spoke on behalf of the family.
“There will never be any understanding or closure, which makes us feel our family has received a life sentence,” he said. “It’s difficult not wishing that the rest of his life will be painful and he suffers like Teagan did, like we have suffered every minute of every day. We pray to god he never walks out a free man.”
In a victim impact statement the woman’s father, Michael Klein, told court the boy still misses his mother, and remains scared of the “bad man” who locked him in the basement.
