The NDP government is implementing a province-wide ban on pesticides used for cosmetic purposes.
“Today we are taking steps to protect families and protect our environment,” says Environment Minister Sterling Belliveau. “We received about 1,700 submissions (from the public). Close to 80 per cent wanted these kind of restrictions.”
The sale and use of non-essential lawn care pesticides will not be allowed as of next spring.
Low-risk pesticides will be allowed, and the ban will not apply to vegetable gardens, golf courses, agriculture or forestry.
Canadian Cancer Society CEO Maureen Summers applauds the legislation, saying it could reduce cancers.
“There’s a growing body of evidence that is suggesting that there is a link between the use of pesticides and some cancers,” says Summers.
A detailed list of which pesticides are banned will be created during the upcoming review process.
