Residents avoid Gottingen, Uniacke Square: poll

A new poll says a lot of residents avoid Gottingen Street and Uniacke Square because they fear for their safety.

The poll, conducted by Bristol Omnifacts for Metro, indicates 49 per cent of those asked said they stay away from that neighbourhood.  Respondents weren’t asked to clarify what they meant by, “safety concerns.”

Councillor Dawn Sloane (District 12, Halifax Downtown) tells Metro, people who avoid that part of her constituency are being “close minded.”

The rest of north-end Halifax and the Hydrostone didn’t fare much better.  A quarter of respondents say they try to stay away from that area.

500 people were polled with a margin of error of 4.4 per cent 19 times out of 20.
