One dead, two on the run after car crash in Dartmouth

Police in Halifax are looking for two people who escaped a mangled car and ran away on foot after a car crash that killed a teenaged boy.

Witnesses say the driver and a passenger took off after a Honda Civic slammed into a telephone pole on Cranberry Crescent in Dartmouth around 10 p.m. Sunday.

Sgt. Richard Gilroy of Halifax Regional Police says the accident caused “catastrophic” damage to the Civic and killed a young man in the backseat.

“EHS arrived on the scene and pronounced him dead at the scene,” he said. “The deceased, we believe, is a 15-year-old who lives in the area.”

Gilroy says witnesses saw the driver of the car and another passenger take off on foot after the crash, launching an extensive investigation that lasted through most of the night.

“The police are quite concerned about the driver and the passenger,” he said. “As the vehicle was extensively damaged, we’re concerned that they may have received some injuries as well.”

Gilroy says investigators have received plenty of information from local witnesses, but are asking anyone who knows anything about the missing pair to contact police.

“It was ten o’clock, there were still people around and people saw and heard things, so we have spoken to many people in the neighbourhood,” he said. “We’re just concerned we may have missed somebody, and if we have, we’d love to hear from them.”

Gilroy says early indications suggest speed was a factor in the crash.
