By-elections mired in expense scandal scheduled for summer

Two votes will be held this summer after their representatives resigned from the Nova Scotia Legislature under the expense scandal’s shadow.
Former Tory MLA Richard Hurlburt was implicated in the Auditor General’s first report, tabled in February.
His resignation has left a seat open in Yarmouth, which Tory party president Rob Batherson says hasn’t left a black mark on the party.
“I see there’s been a Facebook site set up down there urging Richard Hurlburt to run again for the legislature,” he says.
Premier Darrell Dexter says he won’t use the election as a measure of public opinion as the spending scandal continues to unfold.
“Political scientists and the media and commentators get to decide all that after everything’s all over,” says Dexter. “That’s where that will land in the end, people will sort of dig through the ashes and see whether or not they think this affected the outcome in one way or another.”
