Record number of runners competing in 2010 Bluenose

A record number of runners will be trotting through the streets of Halifax as the seventh annual Blue Nose Marathon gets underway this weekend.

The first race is the Doctors Nova Scotia youth run on Saturday, a 4.2-kilometre run in which 2800 athletes have signed up.

Some 6300 participants have signed up for the 5k, 10k, full marathon and half marathon treks.

As the event’s co-chair, Gerry Walsh, explains that’s more participants than ever before.

“There is a greater focus on health and wellness overall,” he said. “Our event is an event for people of all ages, shapes, sizes and abilities, so everyone feels comfortable running.”

He also says the mild winter weather played a factor in getting first-timers to hit the pavement.

Former News 95.7 reporter Greg Morrow will be running the full marathon this year, and while he says his primary motivation is fitness, he says it’s nice to know he’ll be running in sunshine and not rain.

“Whether it’s good or not you sort of have to deal with it anyway,” he said “You never know what the weather’s going to be like during the race, so you kind of have to grin and bear it during training.”

Police are advising motorists to watch out for road closures.
