Residents who fled a Dartmouth apartment fire Thursday night will be spending the weekend on cots and couches. Fire officials said yesterday it will be Monday at the earliest before anyone can return to the building at 50 Roleika Drive.
At least four apartments in the four-storey building sustained heavy smoke and water damage after a fire broke out in a second-storey unit around 7:45 Thursday night. The Red Cross tells News 95.7 most of the 85 tenants have found refuge with friends and family. There are about 20 people staying at a temporary shelter.
Stephen Williams spent at least one night at the Dartmouth East Community Centre. He said he has nowhere else to go.
“So if we’re not allowed back in, I know the damage is extensive, but from what they said the damage at the end of the building, there’s really no damage. So, I’m hoping they let us move back in,” he told News 95.7 Friday.
Williams said police told him his apartment had not been damaged, an assessment made when they retrieved his medication.
