Backyard chickens now allowed in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver homeowners can now transform part of their backyards into a haven for chickens.

Vancouver City Hall has voted in favour of a new bylaw, allowing locals to own and house up to four chickens in their backyards, as long as they are housed in coops no bigger than nine square metres. The birds themselves shouldn’t be younger than four-months-old.

Councillor Andrea Reimer says her initial fears about keeping farm animals in the city have now been addressed. “I shared some of the concerns around health, rodents and backyards and frankly looking at cities that have done this, there haven’t been issues.”

Burnaby, New Westminister, New York, Los Angeles and Portland all allow backyard chickens.
