The New Democrat M-L-A who represents the area where a train derailment occurred yesterday in northeastern Nova Scotia says photos he’s been shown indicate several propane cars off the track.
Clarrie MacKinnon says none of the seven propane tanks are punctured, but there’s still a cleanup required today.
“There was a lot of twisted track and certainly the cars off the side as well,” says MacKinnon. “There was even some involvement with wheels coming off and right out onto the road itself.”
One of the cars is carrying hydrogen peroxide and other cars had paper products on them.
Several families in the area of Avondale, located midway between New Glasgow and Antigonish, have been evacuated from their homes while the cleanup takes place.
It’s the second significant derailment for the Cape Breton and Central Nova Scotia Railway in six years.
“There will be an assessment done on what happened and the cause of it,” says MacKinnon. “And I would hope that the beds would be fully examined to ensure that nothing like this happens again.”
The provincial Transportation Department says it has asked the Transportation
Safety Board of Canada to investigate. Official say it could take up to a week to get everything back on the tracks.
