Soccer in HRM is getting a big boost thanks to a multi-million dollar funding announcement from the province.
Premier Darrell Dexter was handed a soccer ball and jersey today from Soccer Nova Scotia officials after funding $3 million toward a new indoor soccer field in Halifax.
Soccer Nova Scotia Vice President Scott Lytle says they will be expanding the current indoor field at the Halifax Mainland Common.
“It’s a state-of-the-art facility with a field turf carpet and it will be an indoor facility with a full-sized field,” says Lytle. “We’ll be able to curtain-off, or partition it, so that we’ll be able to have three games running simultaneously.”
The facility will also include seating for 1000 spectators. Lytle says there are roughly 15,000 players interested in playing indoor soccer in HRM and currently they only have room for 3500.
The new field should be built by April 2011.
