Scammers posing as IWK staff to fool victims

Phone scams have taken a new and disturbing twist in Halifax.

Police say they’ve received reports of fraudulent callers claiming to be collecting for the IWK

Theresa Rath with Halifax Regional Police explains.

“In each call the caller claims to represent the IWK cancer unit and then asks for a donation,” said Rath.

She says police took the step to check with the IWK and they are not doing call-outs for donations.

Rath says it’s a concern because people tend to be very generous when it comes to sick children.

She says people should be cautious when dealing with over-the-phone requests for money, and the best idea is to ask for the charity to mail you additional information.
