Council notes: noise bylaw exemptions and burial fee hikes

Regional councillors have voted to grant a noise bylaw exemption to Power Promotion Concepts for two big summer concerts on the Commons, despite objections from a few local residents who came to a public meeting.

They’re concerned about potential health issues and the constant noise in the weeks leading up to the concerts.

Metro Halifax reports one sound engineer told council, the noise from past concerts on the Commons is comparable to a jet engine at close range.

But Coun. Sue Uteck says it’s part of the price residents pay for living in a vibrant city.

In other business, council approved an increase to burial costs in the municipality.

The cost of a single burial plot is now $1400 dollars, up from $1000.

The cost for  a cremation plot has more than doubled to $1050 from $500.

Coun. David Hendsbee wanted to raise costs even more saying the fees imposed last night don’t reflect current market values.

On the other hand, Coun. Jerry Blumenthal opposed the increases, saying the city shouldn’t be turning a profit on people’s deaths.
