Power outages dwindling but some linger, days after Hurricane Earl

Hundreds of households are still feeling the effect of Hurricane Earl this morning.  They’re still without power – three full days after the storm.

All of those affected are in small pockets, from Pictou over to Cape Breton.  A Nova Scotia Power spokesman tells CBC everyone should have their lights back by tonight.

Dartmouth homeowner Clarence Gillis has his power back now, but says he doesn’t put much stock in the power company’s estimated restoration times.  He tells CTV News he was told he’d get power back 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Then, 4 p.m.

“Four o’clock came and [went],” Gillis said.  “Each time you would call, you’d get a different answer.”

Gillis finally had power restored on Monday.

Nova Scotia Power’s Allan Richardson says crews are hard at work.  A couple dozen worked overnight, with 170 scheduled for Tuesday.  He tells CTV the cost of the outages doesn’t matter.

“When [outages] happen…they happen.  So we have to deal with that, and we have to get out there and fix the problems and get the customers back on,” Richardson said.

The outages seem to have brought out the best in some people.  Dartmouth war veteran Glynne Lloyd, 93, had food and power, thanks to his neighbours – who even ran extension cords over to his house.

“If it wasn’t for people like that, I think this world would fall to pieces,” he said.

It looks like it will be awhile before we experience another weekend like this last one.  No named storms are currently forecast to head this way.
